What Is Training Load?
Training load describes the stress associated with training and competition. But there's more to it than simply counting how many hours you exercise. Sports scientists often distinguish between external load (the work you’ve actually completed e.g. distance, speed) and internal load (how your body responds to that load e.g. heart rate, perceived effort).

This is the basic principle behind training.
It also explains why avoiding load isn't usually a useful long-term strategy for an athlete. The challenge is applying enough training stimulus to create adaptation while avoiding repeated periods where training demands significantly exceed what you're currently prepared for.
High Training Loads Aren't Necessarily the Problem
This distinction is crucial.
An experienced marathon runner might tolerate 80 kilometres per week extremely well.
An elite footballer can tolerate running, sprinting, gym training and competition loads that would overwhelm an untrained person.
The difference is preparation.
For someone who has been running 10 kilometres per week, suddenly attempting an 80-kilometre week would represent a very different challenge.
So the question isn't simply:
“Is this training load high?”
A better question is:
“How does this training compare with what this person has recently been prepared to tolerate?”
Your training history matters.
The Boom-and-Bust Training Cycle
One pattern we commonly see in physiotherapy looks something like this:
Step 1: You're feeling good, so you dramatically increase training.
Step 2: Pain develops.
Step 3: You stop almost everything.
Step 4: Symptoms improve.
Step 5: You return directly to your previous workload.
Step 6: Symptoms return.
Then the cycle repeats.
Eventually, people can start believing their knee “doesn't like running” or their back “can't handle the gym”. But there may be another explanation. Your symptoms settled during rest, but your capacity to tolerate the previous training demands wasn't progressively rebuilt before you returned.
For many musculoskeletal conditions, rehabilitation involves identifying a tolerable starting point and gradually rebuilding towards the activity you want to perform.

What Is a Training Spike?
The term training spike is commonly used to describe a relatively rapid increase in workload (e.g. suddenly increasing running distance).
Large changes in training are worth paying attention to, particularly after holidays, injury and prolonged time away from exercise.
Research does not however allow us to say that every sudden workload increase will cause injury or that there is one precise percentage increase at which someone becomes injured. Injury risk is influenced by multiple interacting factors.
Training history is simply one of the useful pieces of information we consider.
Your Body Remembers Recent Training More Than Your Personal Best
People often remember what they used to be able to do, e.g. “I used to run 10km easily”, “I used to squat 120kg,” “I used to train five days a week.”
That history is useful. But your current capacity is strongly influenced by what you've been doing recently.
If you haven't run for three months, your first week back isn't necessarily the time to reproduce your old running program.
Training also occurs within the rest of your life. A demanding training week combined with good sleep and recovery may feel very different from that same week during poor sleep, illness and travel.
Training Load Management with Physio: Does Pain Mean You Need to Stop?
Not necessarily.
There are certainly injuries where activity needs to be stopped or significantly restricted. But many musculoskeletal problems can be managed with modified loading rather than complete inactivity.
The right modification depends on the condition and individual. The goal is not simply to find activities that don't hurt. It's to establish what you can currently tolerate and then progressively expand that capacity.

When Pain Needs More Than Load Management
Not every sporting injury is a training-load problem.
Seek prompt assessment if you've experienced:

Inability to bear weight after an acute injury

Rapid or severe swelling

Soreness Versus Injury: How Can You Tell?
Some discomfort after exercise is normal.
Delayed-onset muscle soreness commonly develops after unfamiliar or demanding exercise and usually improves over the following days.
But symptoms deserve closer attention when they:

Become progressively worse

Persist between sessions

Alter how you run, walk or lift

Cause a limp
-
Consistently worsen during training

Reduce strength or performance

Return every time training increases

Prevent normal progression
If the same problem repeatedly interferes with your training, assessment can be more useful than continually guessing which exercise you need to stop.
How Should You Increase Training?
There isn't one progression that works for everyone.
But several practical principles can help.
1. Establish Your Current Baseline
Before adding more, understand what you're already tolerating consistently. Your baseline should reflect what you're actually doing—not what you wish you were doing.
2. Avoid Changing Everything at Once
If you're increasing distance substantially, you may choose to keep intensity relatively stable initially.
If you're introducing sprinting, you may not need to simultaneously make a large increase in total running volume.

3. Build Consistency
Your body generally adapts better to repeated exposure than occasional enormous sessions.
4. Progress Towards the Demands of Your Goal
Your training should eventually resemble what you're preparing for.
5. Monitor Your Response
Patterns over time are more informative than obsessing over one isolated session.
Strength Training Can Increase Your Capacity
Load management isn't just about manipulating how much training you do.
Another strategy is to increase how much load your body can tolerate.
Progressive resistance training can improve muscular strength and help develop the capacity required for sport.
For runners, this may involve the calves, quadriceps, hamstrings and hip musculature.
For field athletes, strength supports the demands of running, sprinting, jumping and changing direction.
For gym athletes, progressive resistance itself builds capacity for heavier training.
The Goal Isn't to Avoid High Loads
This is perhaps the most important message.
High loads aren't automatically the enemy. Good training load management is not about keeping training permanently easy, it's about progressively developing your capacity so that a workload that feels challenging today can eventually become routine.
That's adaptation.
